My 3-Step Framework For How To "Shock" Yourself Out of a Rut

Convex Chronicle #2

Happy Thursday,

In today's newsletter I'm going to share with you the fastest way I know to break a negative cycle of behaviour and start sorting your shit out.

You will learn an easy-to-follow framework for how to clear your brain fog, set new goals, and live a more fulfilling life.

Unfortunately, most people will remain stuck in these patterns for months, years, and in some cases, their whole lives.

Dr. Nicole LePera writes about this in the Tweet below:

The reason is that they never manage to take the first (most important) step towards change.

The Most Common Reasons Why

  • Lack of clarity

  • Procrastination

  • Fear of the unknown

The longer you let these things get in the way, the harder they become to overcome.

Shocking your system gives you a small window of clarity which you can use to break free, here's my 3-step framework for how to do it:

Step 1: The Shock

"Your life doesn't get better by chance. It gets better by change" - Jim Rohn

The shock is the most important step as it creates the space you need to take the next steps.

You need to do something extreme that will interrupt the patterns your mind has fallen into.

Sell or give away half of your possessions, run until your lungs feel like they're going to explode, get a last-minute flight to another country etc.

The further the action is from what you usually do, the better.

Step 2: The Clarity Window

This is where most people go wrong. They take action but do nothing with the temporary clarity that they gain.

This is your moment to strike. Think of the window as a gap in the armour of procrastination that you can drive your sword into.

Reflect on how you've been living. List everything that you know you shouldn't be doing and write an accompanying list of better habits you want to replace them with.

Uninstall all the apps that you waste time on, delete the games from your computer or console, clear the cupboards of junk food.

Use this time to build a mini-version of your new, better life.

Step 3: The Discipline Fortress

If you've made it this far you're so close to the light at the end of the tunnel.

You've taken the extreme action required to give yourself a precious moment of clarity.

You've made the most of that time to break your old habits and establish new goals.

What you need to do now is build your discipline fortress. This is a list of 1-3 habits that you always do and 1-3 things you must avoid.

For example:

Going for a morning run, meditating for 15-minutes, and reading a chapter of your book could go on the first list.

Playing video games, watching porn, and smoking cigarettes would be the kind of things you would put on the second list.

Summary

My 3-step framework for getting out of a rut:

  1. Shock your system with extreme action

  2. Use the clarity you get to break old habits and set new goals

  3. Create a list of good and bad habits to do and avoid each day

Never forget that you are the only person who can save yourself. And on that note I'll leave you with this quote:

“You are the master of your destiny. You can influence, direct and control your own environment. You can make your life what you want it to be.” - Napoleon Hill
